The Laurel Highlands of western Pennsylvania is where you’ll find Roaring Run Resort. The Allegheny Mountains begin here in the rolling hills and small peaks of the Highlands, making the region a prime area for outdoor activities. Often called southwestern Pennsylvania’s playground, the Laurel Highlands is comprised of hundreds of towns and villages in scenic Westmoreland, Fayette, Cambria, and Somerset Counties.
The Laurel Highlands provide thousands of acres of state and county parks and forests. Laurel Ridge State Park is very popular among hikers. Situated along the crest of Laurel Mountain, this 13,500-acre park offers the famous Laurel Highland Hiking Trail, a 70-mile trail that spirals through parks, forests, and game lands in all four counties.
Ohiopyle State Park in Fayette County is a rafter’s dream. Adventurers from all over can feel the thrill of a lifetime as the choppy waters briskly escort their rubber rafts down the Youghiogheny River for an action-packed trip like no other. In addition to Ohiopyle’s beautiful falls, visitors are lured by the park’s 100 acres of nature preserve and amphitheater featuring nature programs. If swimming and boating are what you want, Laurel Hill State Park in Somerset County provides a 65-acre lake with a large beach for sun bathing.
If you like looking into the past, the Laurel Highlands offer a wealth of historical sites. Fort Ligonier is a full-scale, on-sight reconstruction of the original fort that Great Britain used from 1758-1766 while fighting the French. The Compass Inn, a resting place for travelers nearly 200 years ago, charms visitors today with its original log cabin, cook house, barn, and blacksmith shop. Nemacolin Castle in Brownsville dates to the late 1700’s.
Overlooking the Monongahala River, the castle was a meeting place for the early settlers.
